HP Laptops Best Buy In 2022

HP makes some of our favorite HP Laptops Best Buy, but with so many options, deciding which one to go with can be difficult. We’ve tested a lot of HP laptops, from the premium Spectre line to the Omen gaming rigs. The best HP laptops in each category are listed below.

If you’ve decided on a business laptop, check out our best HP EliteBook guide or our best business laptops rankings. Portable devices are among HP’s best laptops. See our best 13-inch laptops page for a larger selection.

HP has announced a slew of new laptops for 2022, including ProBooks and a 2-in-1 laptop with a new AMD R7 Pro CPU, thanks to CES 2022. If these laptops turn out to be the best HP laptops of the year, we’ll let you know.

What are the best HP laptops?

HP makes a lot of great laptops, but the Envy x360 and Envy 13 are two of our favorites. They aren’t the best laptop in the lineup, but they are the most affordable. For $799, you get a portable package with a premium aluminum design and fast performance. The 13.3-inch, 1080p display is bright and vibrant, and the keyboard is one of the best available.

The Spectre x360 13 and Spectre x360 14 are better laptops if you have a little more money to spend. The Spectre x360 13 and 14 have a more upscale design and a flexible chassis that transforms into a tablet. Most importantly, the battery life is incredible. Similarly, the Elite Dragonfly, designed for business users, is a hot laptop with a svelte design and stunning display.

The ZBook Create G7, a slim workstation with epic specs, is a good option for business users who require more power than the Elite Dragonfly. Gamers should look into the Omen 15, which is a powerful gaming rig with a lot of performance at a reasonable price. HP also makes excellent printers, such as the HP Envy Inspire 7955e All-in-One Printer, which is an excellent home office tool.

REASONS TO BUY

Excellent performance +Bright and vivid 1080p display +Stylish and compact aluminum design +Long battery life

REASONS TO AVOID

There is no infrared camera -The touchpad is made of plastic

The HP Envy 13 is one of the best 13-inch laptops on the market and one of the best laptops under $1,000. The Envy 13 is a fantastic value if you want the best laptop for less than four figures, despite the fact that it still has a plastic touchpad. The all-aluminum design and excellent 11th Gen Intel Core CPUs are what make this such a great deal.

We discovered that an Envy 13 with an Intel Core i5-1135G7 delivers fast performance for almost any task during our testing. This particular Envy costs only $900 and can outperform laptops costing well over $1,000. The Envy 13 also has a comfortable keyboard and a bright, vivid 13.3-inch display.

There isn’t much about the Envy 13 that we don’t like. It is the ultimate money-saving laptop if you can get past the lack of an IR camera (there is a fingerprint sensor).

REASONS TO AVOID

There is no infrared camera.

The HP Envy x360 13 is the best laptop under $1,000 on the market, as well as the best HP laptop. Despite the lack of a stylus, the Envy is a 2-in-1 that can be used as a tent or tablet. The aluminum design and Herculian AMD Ryzen processors are what make this such a great deal.

We discovered that an Envy x360 13 with a Ryzen 5 4500U CPU outperforms laptops with 10th Gen Intel processors in our tests. This particular Envy costs only $800 and can outperform laptops costing well over $1,000, including the obscenely expensive MacBook Pro. The Envy x360 13 also has a comfortable keyboard and a bright, vivid 13.3-inch display.

The Envy x360 15 gets an honorable mention as well. It shares many of the same features as the 13-inch model, but with a larger screen. We wish it came with a stylus, but the Envy x360 13 lacks that feature as well.

REASONS TO PURCHASE

Amazing, opulent design +Stunning OLED and FHD display options +Long battery life +Comfortable keyboard

REASONS TO AVOID

Expensive -Inconvenient to use as a tablet

The Spectre x360 14 is the best 2-in-1 laptop that has ever been made. The 13.5-inch model, which was just released for 2021, builds on its predecessors while also adding useful new features like a 3:2 aspect ratio display and 11th Gen Intel CPUs with Iris Xe graphics. A stunning design, bright and vivid 1920 x 1280-pixel IPS and 3K2K OLED display options, epic 12+ hour battery life, and fast overall performance are all features of this laptop.

With a large, silky touchpad, a comfortable (albeit shallow) keyboard, excellent security options (fingerprint sensor and facial recognition), and a good selection of ports, it’s easy to see why we like this laptop so much.

If you have the money, we recommend the Spectre x360 14 over the Envy 13, especially if you need a flexible design. In fact, if you want a convertible notebook, the Spectre x360 14 is the best HP laptop. Sure, it has flaws, but once you hold it in your hands, you’ll quickly forget about them.

The EliteBook x360 1040 G7 from HP is one of the best business laptops available. The x360 1040 G7 features a beautiful chassis with a flexible hinge that allows it to convert from a laptop to a tablet.

It’s one of the few notebooks that appear to have no flaws. A bright and vivid 14-inch display is included with the stylus chassis. The EliteBook x360 1040 G7’s brilliance doesn’t end there, though. The laptop also has a surprisingly comfortable keyboard, quick performance, and a slew of security features like an IR camera, a fingerprint sensor, and MIL-SPEC-810-rated durability. The 10th Gen Intel CPUs are powerful, even if they lack graphical oomph, and the battery lasts for more than 11 hours on a charge.

For these reasons, the EliteBook x360 1040 is the best HP laptop for business users.

REASONS TO PURCHASE

Quick AMD Ryzen processors +Bright, vivid 13.3-inch display +Ultra-lightweight chassis +Excellent value

AVOID FOR THESE REASONS

Bloatware everywhere -Plastic touchpad -Poor webcam

The Pavilion Aero 13 may not have the same premium feel like its more expensive siblings, but it is just as capable. The Aero, which is powered by AMD Ryzen chips, can compete in performance with notebooks that cost twice as much. But it’s not all about raw power. A bright and vivid 13.3-inch display, strong battery life, and a variety of ports you don’t typically see nowadays go hand in hand with its capable engine. There are compromises, as with any mainstream laptop, but given everything the Aero 13 offers at this price, they don’t seem worth mentioning.

Fast performance from AMD Ryzen chips, a featherweight magnesium alloy chassis, and a bright and vivid 13.3-inch display are all highlights of this notebook. There’s also a large number of ports and a fingerprint sensor for quick login. It doesn’t seem worth it to air my grievances, but a larger glass touchpad, an IR camera, and quad speakers are at the top of my “wish list” for the next model.

As a result, the Aero 13 represents a watershed moment for a long-running but underappreciated laptop line. We can only hope that future Pavilion laptops live up to the potential demonstrated by this exceptional notebook.

REASONS TO PURCHASE

Exquisite design +Sturdy, compact chassis +Bright 1080p display +Fast performance

AVOID FOR THESE REASONS

Poor webcam -Small touchpad

If I had to choose between the 14-inch Spectre x360 14 and the 13-inch Spectre x360 13, I’d go with the 14-inch model. However, when you consider the larger version’s higher price (nearly $400 at the time of writing), I find myself leaning toward the Spectre x360 13. This 13-inch version, like the Spectre 14, has a bright display, a comfortable keyboard, excellent battery life, and one of the most striking designs we’ve ever seen on a laptop.

It has 11th Gen Intel CPUs for fast performance, and the built-in IR camera and fingerprint sensor eliminate the need for a password. While it doesn’t come with a stylus, the Spectre x360 13 is a good value for a premium convertible laptop.

REASONS FOR PURCHASE +Bright, high-resolution display, Battery life that lasts all day, A pleasant typing experience

REASONS TO STAY AWAY

It’s a little heavier than most convertibles., Bezels that are thick

The HP Chromebook x2 will definitely satisfy if you’re willing to pay a premium for your next Chromebook. We say premium, but what we really mean is just under or just over $500. The attractive white lid and vibrant 12.3-inch touchscreen are appealing, and the nearly 9-hour battery life outperforms most Windows-based 2-in-1s.

A bundled pen for taking notes and full Google Play compatibility for downloading Android apps are also highlighted. We just wish it was a little lighter than this 3.2-pound machine.

REASONS TO AVOID

Battery life is poor.

The HP Omen 15 is a beautiful demon with a sultry 15-inch 4K UHD panel that’s bright, clear, and dances with vibrant warm colors. On the inside, an Intel Core i7-10750H CPU and a capable Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super with Max-Q of 8GB VRAM power the Omen’s heart.

The Omen 15 is an attractive option worth considering because of its simple yet sexy styling, but keep in mind that it weighs over 5 pounds and has short battery life.

REASONS TO AVOID

This workstation is equipped with an Intel Core i9 processor and an Nvidia RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU to take on any challenger. The laptop is attractive, with a sleek, svelte chassis, but it can withstand a few bumps thanks to MIL-SPEC certification. In addition, you have a captivating 4K OLED touch panel with stunning picture quality.

The HP ZBook Create G7 is pricey at $4,559, but you get premium performance, so it’s money well spent for production professionals. Still, for the money you’re paying, I’d prefer a brighter display, and the battery life could be significantly improved.

REASONS TO BUY

REASONS TO AVOID

Drab design -Extremely expensive -Extremely heavy (for a laptop), Battery life is on the short side.

Meet the monstrous HP ZBook Fury 17 G8, a workstation laptop that doesn’t know the meaning of “overkill,” as if you needed another reminder that we live in the future.

It can be configured with an Intel Xeon W-11955M processor (+$1,239), discrete Nvidia RTX A5000 graphics (+$3,147), a 3840 x 2160 LED touchscreen display (+$483), 64GB of RAM (+$820), a 1TB SSD (+$365), and a few other options, bringing the total price to $6,421 total.

Granted, you don’t have to aim for the stars when building your system; there are ten different Intel Core i5, i7, and i9 processors to choose from, as well as six different Nvidia graphics cards. Is the HP ZBook Fury 17 G8 the most powerful workstation available? That depends on your budget and configuration, but if you have enough cash for an Intel Xeon processor and Nvidia RTX A5000 graphics (wow! ), this is about as future-proof as laptops get right now.

The EliteBook 840 G7 is a sophisticated business laptop. But it’s not just about appearances. It has a long battery life of 9 hours and 23 minutes, a great keyboard, and, when you need it, a SureView privacy display to keep strangers from looking at your screen.

There are a lot of ports, so you can get rid of the dongles, and the top-firing speakers sound great. Yes, the webcam isn’t ideal, but that’s something that can be remedied with an external solution. The EliteBook 840 G5 is less expensive than most premium business laptops, with a 10th Intel Core i7 CPU, up to 64GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD.

The HP Elite Folio’s $2,000 price tag is justified by its innovative, problem-solving technology rather than gimmicks. It also outlasts the Energizer Bunny, lasting a staggering 16 hours and 21 minutes on a single charge.

The Elite Folio not only has the stamina of an Olympic champion, but it also breaks records like one. The Elite Folio is the first business convertible in the world to feature a stunning pull-forward mechanism. You can use this feature to turn your display into a digital easel and channel your inner Bob Ross. The Elite Folio comes with a fantastic stylus, which is ideal for users who enjoy digital note-taking and doodling.

Choosing the right HP Laptop

HP, as one of the leading laptop manufacturers, has a laptop for every need, from high-end business laptops to low-cost Chromebooks. Because there’s so much choice, deciding which laptop is right for you can be difficult, so here’s a quick rundown of HP’s various model lines.

Spectre: HP’s best model line features premium, lightweight designs with portable power and beautiful displays.

Envy: If you’re looking for a laptop with a stylish design, vibrant displays, and high-quality audio, HP’s Envy line has plenty to offer.

The Elite Dragonfly series, HP’s new premium business laptop, features a stunning, premium design that is both durable and lightweight. Expect the most up-to-date, top-of-the-line features and components, as well as a correspondingly high price.

HP’s business laptops with IT support, high performance, and premium designs are known as EliteBooks. The thin-and-light EliteBook Folio is the name to look for if you want more portability. If you decide to go with this line, don’t forget to check out our list of the top 5 EliteBook accessories.

ProBook: The ProBook line of business-capable laptops offers no-nonsense designs and performance for everyday office productivity without the premium price tag.

HP’s ZBooks are designed for professionals who require workstation-class performance, as well as robust security and rugged designs.

Notebook: If HP’s “Notebook” line sounds generic, it’s because it is, but these basic designs provide everyday performance at a low price.

Pavilion: If you’re looking for a happy medium between HP’s budget-friendly “Notebook” line and its premium Envy laptops, the Pavilion is the way to go. These mid-range laptops come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but they all deliver solid performance and feature sets.

Omen: HP’s gaming brand, Omen laptops have a little more oomph and a lot more graphics power, delivering a good gaming experience for (relatively) low prices.

Stream: Check out HP’s brightly colored, ultra-low-cost Stream laptops for a Chromebook-style laptop with Windows.

Chromebooks: The HP Chromebook line offers Google’s Chrome OS in a variety of well-made laptops, with prices ranging from $200 to $500.

How we test HP laptops

Before we put HP laptops in the hands of our reviewers, we put them through extensive benchmark testing, both synthetic and real-world. From speed and battery life to display brightness, speaker volume, and system heat, we test everything.

The brightness and sRGB color gamut of a laptop’s display are measured using a Klein K10 colorimeter. We put the laptop through a slew of tests, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests, to see how well it performs.

We put the laptop through its paces by converting a 4K video to 1080p resolution and duplicating a 4.97GB multimedia file. The Dirt 3 benchmark with medium settings and 1080p resolution is our real-world graphics test.

We also perform heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video, and our battery test involves continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. Anything above the category average (8 hours and 36 minutes) is considered a good result. These tests are, of course, supplemented by our reviewers’ hands-on testing.
