Smallest ATX Case for PC Builds

What Does ATX Mean, Anyway?

ATX stands for “Advanced Technology eXtended”, which is a notoriously imprecise and useless term. It’s a motherboard standard (or “form factor”) going back to the mid-90s and is still the most prevalent kind of motherboard in consumer PCs.

The ATX designation indicates the motherboard’s dimensions and basic architecture, which in turn offer a rough idea of the number and kind of ports and expansion slots.

For instance, some ATX boards may contain four RAM slots, whilst others may have six or eight.

Other Motherboard Sizes

Many (if not most) gaming PCs house ATX motherboards or a version of the ATX standard. These varieties number well over a dozen, although most of them are very unusual.

The two smaller ones you’ll see most regularly are Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX; the latter is simply a version of the ATX standard, despite its odd moniker.

Standard ATX boards are the biggest of these three varieties and contain the most expansion slots, so they’re capable of supporting more (and consequently more powerful) hardware.

Micro-ATX boards are smaller and have fewer expansion slots, while Mini-ITX boards are smaller still, but both are more than capable of powering a sleek and elegant gaming PC.

smallest atx case

There is a Mini-ATX form factor, which is smaller than a Mini-ITX board, although this form factor is both rare and poorly defined.

To shop for one, you’ll have to conduct a rigorous study on the characteristics of each individual board; the “Mini-ATX” name is sometimes used so broadly that it’s possible to mistakenly purchase something different than what you were expecting.

There are form factors bigger than ATX, such as EATX and XL ATX, which surely won’t fit inside a small ATX case—they’re too enormous.

Note also that, while though Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX boards will physically fit into an ATX chassis, the case may not have mounting holes for them, so double-check before you purchase.

Choosing a Motherboard Form Factor and Case Size

“Compact ATX” is a popular Google search these days, although the phrase normally is used to refer to a kind of PC case, not to a motherboard.

It’s essentially synonymous with “mid-tower case”, which most frequently defines those that can handle an ATX motherboard and the components you’d ordinarily connect to it, and that is around 40.6 cm x 25.4 cm x 45.7 cm (16” x 10” x 18”).

All of the five cases we’ve selected in the review part are mid-tower cases or smaller.

There’s another sense in which the word “compact ATX” is problematically vague: It doesn’t define whether the case in question takes just conventional ATX boards or whether it’s also compatible with Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX boards, as many cases are.

When you’re constructing a list of components for your ideal PC, it’s normally best to start with the motherboard; this option will dictate which GPUs, CPUs, and RAM you may connect to it.

Once you’ve made that selection, seek a small case with suitable mounting slots.

Take care to read the description carefully to check that the tiny ATX case you’re eyeballing is indeed compatible with your specific motherboard.

Can an ATX Motherboard Fit in a Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX Case?

Many (but not all) ATX cases can handle smaller boards, but if a case is promoted as a Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX case, it typically couldn’t comfortably accommodate a bigger board.

“Readily” is the essential word here; if there’s enough room for the board itself, you could always drill your own mounting holes.

Carefully read the product description to discover whether the case is precisely what you’re searching for.

Drawbacks of Tiny (Gaming) PCs

An ultra-space-efficient gaming machine that you can simply take across town for a LAN party is amazing (people still have LAN parties, right?).

It’s also handy to be able to conceal your PC or media center on a tiny shelf or behind your TV. There are a few negatives to a compact PC, however.

For one thing, squeezing a complete set of gaming- or content-creation-ready technology into a space approximately half the size of a conventional PC tower restricts airflow and makes it much more complicated to keep all those components cool.

It’s conceivable but more complicated to install liquid cooling in a tiny ATX chassis.

Less internal space also implies fewer hardware possibilities and fewer upgrade possibilities. All else being equal, a smaller case implies that there are fewer GPUs or even simply less powerful low-profile GPUs and power supplies that can fit inside it.

However, since tiny form factor PCs are rapidly becoming more popular, component makers are beginning to provide a greater range of space-efficient components, so you should still have a decent number of alternatives today and in the future.

smallest atx case

It’s also worth highlighting that less space typically implies fewer expansion slots in the case and (possibly) less capacity on the motherboard, which means you may not be able to install as many NVMe M.2 drives or RAM modules as you’d want – or put as many 3,5″ HDDs into the chassis as you’d like.

This isn’t as big an issue as it was a few years ago, however; hard drive technology has gone a long way, and you can still squeeze 32GB (or even 64GB) of RAM into two slots—more than enough for any current game.

Still, if you want your PC or media center to contain items like a DVD/Blu-ray drive or an integrated SD card reader, a small ATX chassis may not have a place for them.

Despite their shortcomings, tiny ATX setups may be a wonderful alternative, providing you have a strategy to control heat and that you don’t mind losing some additional hardware that normally isn’t vital to gaming.

Building their name from their mid-priced but high-quality PC cases, Fractal Design offered their lightweight variants at lower rates later on. Some of the major features that Fractal Design’s PC cases normally include, such as the anodized aluminum front panel and the asphalt sound dampening, were omitted to cut pricing. However, such casings still maintain the firm’s trademark solid face style. Adding a glass panel wasn’t enough for Fractal Design, so they went on to testify their Fractal Design Meshify C PC box. Fractal Design Meshify C is the Smallest ATX case on our list.

The intake fans in the front don’t have to pull air through the tiny slots situated on the edges of the front panel; this means that Fractal Design Meshify C will probably be able to keep your components a bit cooler. The automated fan controllers normally turn down the fans on the systems that keep the temperatures in check, so a good cooling to noise ratio may be reached. The Fractal Design Meshify C PC case’s front panel is not smooth and angled in different directions. The manufacturer argues that this promotes airflow, but the more probable advantage is that ripples won’t appear on it as they typically do on a flat surface.

The front I/O ports are positioned at the top of the front panel that has two USB 3.0 ports, a microphone connector, a headphone jack, a reset button, and a power button. There is a mesh panel on the top of the chassis directly beyond the front I/O ports, secured with magnetic strips. On the bottom of the case, there is a full-length bottom dust filter that slides in from the front and protects both the power supply inlet and an optional intake fan making it the finest Compact ATX case. On the underside of the Fractal Design Meshify C PC case, we have a detachable power supply flange; immediately above it are seven expansion slots with screw-on covers, and above that is a slide-able fan mount.

The front panel of the Raijintek Thetis PC case features diamond-cut edges, much like all other cases of this series.
